Gill Sweeting MBACP (Accred) Counsellor/Psychotherapist

Why come for counselling or psychotherapy?

People usually come to therapy for help on a specific issue, such as:

  • Grief or loss
  • Depression
  • Anxiety or fear
  • Feeling lost or stuck
  • Emotional difficulties
  • Stressful life situations
  • Survival of trauma or abuse
  • A lost sense of self or identity
  • Alcohol issues, including dependency
  • Feeling stuck or facing difficult choices
  • Relationship difficulties - past or present
  • Repeated destructive patterns of behaviour

How does it help?

By exploring what is happening, we can together understand the underlying causes. Often, when working with me, clients discover that their current issues are symptoms of deeper underlying patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving. Developed when young, these patterns may have been a creative method of protection that is no longer relevant in adult life. I help people to explore their old patterns, and support them through the changes they need to make in order to create a better future.

Why integrative?

As an integrative psychotherapist, I draw on many different psychological theories, techniques and approaches, giving me flexibility to tailor the way I work to meet my clients' needs at the time. I identify pieces of theory that will help and integrate them into our work. There are many branches of psychotherapy, yet studies have shown that no one approach is more successful than any other. Fundamental to them all, however, is the development of a particular kind of therapeutic relationship. The quality of the relationship is the main factor in change and healing for clients, and is central to the integrative approach. For this reason, I am keen for you to find out about me and how I work before choosing to work with me.

What usually happens in a session?

Normally we will meet for an hour a week at a time suitable for us both. The first session is an assessment, in which we decide whether we can work together successfully. After this, you will set the agenda and talk about issues which are a current prioiity for you. I will ask questions and give you insights from theory which relate to your experience. Sometimes I will suggest an exercise which may help to illuminate the unconscious processes at work. Together, we will discover the reasons for your difficulties and explore the potential for change. As you experiment with new ways of being, you will share that experience with me and I will guide and support you through your transformation.

What does it feel like to be in therapy?

Sometimes being in psychotherapy feels like talking to a really good friend, who is focused on your wellbeing, who is truly concerned for you and who doesn't judge you. Sometimes it feels like having a lifeline or a guardian angel. Sometimes it feels a little uncomfortable, because you are being gently challenged and it is difficult to change, yet in an atmosphere of warmth and good humour, you know you can make it through. It always feels safe. You are on an important journey and I am there beside you all the way.

What does it cost?

Each one-hour session, including the first one, costs £35 (payable by cheque or cash).

How do I book in?
